Two Guys Chicken Burger

Two assumptions I had got overturned today. The first was that Kiwis won’t queue for anything. The second was Royal Oak Mall sucks.

Two Guys Chicken Burger had their grand opening this weekend with a very special offer of $5 burgers which, in this economy, is insane. I timed my visit to align with my weekly shopping expedition to Pak n Save. New Zealand’s tiredest mall (maybe second to the one in Thames) hasn’t seen this many people below the age of 65 since my six year old birthday party at McDonald’s. The queues were nothing short of impressive, but I thought Two Guys did a good job of belting out some high quality burgers and fries despite the pressure (for some context, they sold 500 burgers in 3 hours).

When my turn finally arrive (I’m not going to tell you how long I waited. Okay I will, it was just shy of 2 hours), what arrived was something I was happy to put in my belly. We ordered an Original Cheese and a Nashville Cheese with a fries and drink combo. Both burgers were excellent specimens. The chicken (breast btw) was juicy and the crispy coating nice and greaseless. Same went for the hand cut fries (which I forgot to take photos of, forgive me!) which came with skins on, adding extra texture and earthiness. These guys have superior frying skills.

The Nashville Cheese

The Original Cheese

I’m usually a Nashville hot chicken girl but today I actually preferred their Original chicken instead, the seasoning on it was really tasty in a cracky KFC kind of way (without being a straight rip off of the Colonel). My husband preferred the Nashville Cheese, and I would recommend you order it hot if you do. The hot version is more flavoursome than the medium without being intolerably hot. The brioche buns are pillowy and rich with just the right amount of strength to handle the moisture of the sauce and the torsion that comes with burger eating. The pickles are the perfect thickness, a refreshing oasis amongst the sauce, cheese and chicken.

And the real test? I didn’t feel sick afterwards.

So there you have it. I really enjoyed everything I ate today. The South can keep their Popeyes, we Central folk can have Two Guys
